Scott Langton

One of the demonstrators I had looked forward to seeing was Scott Langton. A gifted ornamental blacksmith, Scott has been involved with bladesmithing for as long as I can remember. His recreation of the original Sutton Hoo sword brought him international recognition and admiration from his fellow bladesmiths. His demonstration at Jim Batson's hammerin in Alabama had people talking years afterward. He duplicated the feat on center stage at the conference.

The sword is a bundle of alternate twist rods wrapped by an edge layer of Damascus. He had prepared the billet for welding using collars to hold the elements together, then with the bleachers full, he successfully welded the three foot bar and drew it out into the rough sword blank. His energy and enthusiasm was as exciting as the weld was difficult. Scott has detailed the construction of the sword in Volume 17, Number 2 Anvil's Ring, 1989 and it has a protected place in my library.
